I do work at the Tacoma plant in Fremont, California and also at the suppliers and I'd like to know more about what you think about how foreign cars are assembled here... And what safety things they do or don't do vs. the big 3.
This plant stamps, welds, and paints cabs. the decks (beds) are stamped in Mexico by a 3rd party, then welded, painted, and assembled there. They're hauled up I-5 for JIT assembly.
Seats come from Johnson Controls, Frames from Dana. Some plastics come from an injection molding company called Injex, some in house. All of these suppliers employ quite a number of SF Bay Area workers... Bottom line, a very large number of jobs are in the USA to "screw together" these vehicles, from tier 1 suppliers to in-house manufacturing. Toyota has a huge commitment to USA mfg.
Same for Nissan in TN. Ever seen that plant? It's bigger than the big 3 plants. It blew my mind when I first saw it, and I consult in auto mfg. Same for Toyota in Georgetown, KY. both those plants put out over 350k cars per year, and employ thousands of workers each.
It's not like when Volvo did "knock down kits" in canada, these Japanese mfrs do full blown stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly in the USA. Toyota has an engine plant here, too.
The next toyota truck plant is going into San Antonio, TX. It goes live in early 2006. Toyota makes Tacoma in Fremont, CA; Tundra in Princeton, Indiana; and next a F-250 size in Texas. All do stamping, weld, paint, and assembly. Yep, a new plant built from the ground up. How many big 3 are building brand new plants?
My pal drives a tacoma and is an electrician. When union boys bust his chops for driving an "import" he is happy to point out that his Tacoma is union built in California, while their trucks were built in Mexico. That shuts 'em up.
