I have never been any good at that game. However, first observation is that the range you gave them for your acceptable range was at least 3000k too low if that is really where you wanted to conclude. Ha 20/20 hindsight is so clear. You need to be realistic but you should generally offer up numbers that are slightly inflated unless you intend to lay the figures down with a resounding thump.
How you play it you'll have to judge. Every situation is different. If that is first offer it may be worth a counter. You'll have to use your judgement but a careful counter shouldn't cost you the offer. Just don't put yourself in a box unless your willing to let it pass. If you think your 3K extra is really fair and that isn't a huge margin more in relationship to the salary counter with 3 to 5 K perhaps. However, perhaps that isn't smart; I have know idea how big those numbers are as a percentage of the salary and it might be unrealistic. Also, in your case you say this is a complete change. If your untested and you think this is a good opporuntiy you may want to go soft or even accept it. At this point they have nothing into you (except an interview). After you have some experience you can make a case to reset the base if you think your worth more on the market.
