My one attempt at this was disastrous..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 24 Jun 2005 16:47:41 In Reply to: ot>salary negotiations....., kooch, Fri, 24 Jun 2005 12:42:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've heard lots of success stories regarding negotiating a higher starting salary, and read others at on-line job boards, but my experience was decidedly different.
Three years ago I interviewed for a position with the Univ of Mich and received an offer of employment from them. During the interview the U queried me about my current salary and expressed their difficulty in matching/exceeding it. I offered that I would be willing to take a small decrease, approx 5%, because I would realize other gains (no more 100 mile daily commute!) by working for the U. All other benefits were effectively equal.
When I received the job offer from the individual who would be my new Dept Head, the financial compensation was a decrease of 11+%. I asked if it would be proper to suggest meeting half-way between their offer and my current salary. He said he would take my counter offer to his supervisors and discuss it. I never said I wouldn't accept their offer.
Two days later I received an over-night letter from the U, signed by a VP of Human Resources of something like that, withdrawing the offer entirely! All attempts at follow-up conversations with the signatory and the prospective Dept Head were unanswered.
A week later the A-squared News had a major cover story regarding the U losing portions of their funding for the construction project I was being interviewed for.
So which event resulted the the withdrawl of the employment offer? I'll never know for sure.
