Yes, an old thread, but it has some curiosity value, so here goes. Let me say first that I never get rid of a watch that has died, so that means I have a dead watch box. Most of the dead ones are old Casio's from the 80's and early 90's. They died mostly because I never took them off, banged them up good, plus I did a lot of biking along the Pacific Ocean back then and got a lot of sweat and salt mist on them. Then I bought a manual wind Russian submariner military watch with a blue face and big thick indestructible crystal that I loved and wore for years until it died. After that one died I went with a Timex Expedition with the light and easy alarm feature, which was essential for the video work I was doing at the time. Deciding I wanted another rugged military style watch, I bought the Chase-Durer Blackhawk chronograph with alarm. Tell you how shock resistant that watch is: last year I took a 6 foot dive off a wall (playing with the dogs and tripped) and landed wrist first onto a brick floor. Painful and embarassing yes, and I was lucky to not break any bones, but the watch band broke in two from the impact, yet not one scratch or function problem with that watch. I also have a growing collection of simple, elegant mid-range watches for "a night on the town" purposes such as a mock gold Cartier given to me as a gift by the late actor Bill Bixby, or a silver band blue face Cole that looks great, but I can barely read because the hands are so tiny. Then there's my fun collection, including an all black Smith and Wesson brand watch, a distinctive "Watch-It" brand silver body white dial with glow light bought at Walmart for for $7, and my newest - a NASCAR brand sport watch. Then there's my dirty job watches - a plastic Timex with nylon strap and another Walmart special with a black cloth band.
