As a fairly serious cyclist (15k) over the past four years - I commute 25 miles each way to work a few times per week I share my learnings.
1. Buy the bike that best fits you. Small differences of weight, brand, make little difference if the fit is off. Road bikes keep you in the same position for long periods, fit is much more important that a mtn bike for comfort.
2. Buy from a shop that will help fit and dial you in (adjust stem, bars, and such for the right fit). You'll be happier long term with what they do.
3. Your price range will get you in a fair starter bike. Worry not about name brand on the frame, but component quality. Wheels can make a huge difference on a road bike - if you can get Shimano 105 components in this range that's good.
4. Look for last years models/close outs. Big savings, little change in technology (usually paint color)
5. Don't expect the saddle it comes with to fit well - usually a quick upgrade to find a more comfortable one. Fit is highly suggestive - so get what works for you.
6. Frame material... in this price range you'll find some aluminum ones that are brutally stiff. Steel has a bit more give, and some shaped aluminum ones can be a little softer. Make sure the ride isn't abusive.
I hope this helps, good luck with the bike... it's a lot of fun.
Take Care,
Scott
