I am sure the software police will keep track... OK, tell me another.
Seriously, one disadvantage of alot of the student priced software is whether it can be used to qualify for a later upgrade. Here is some math on a well known office suite.
MS Office 2003 student versions are $149. Not usable for future upgrades.
MS Office 2003 Standard is $399. Upgradable, but $250 more.
MS Office 2003 Upgrade version is $239 if you qualify. It is later upgradable. $90 more....
MSWorks at $49 qualifies you for the upgrade version of Office 2003. Therefore $49 + $239 = $288. Therefore an upgradable install is a $111 savings over the original install and only $139 more than the student version. You do not need to install the MSWorks, only let it read the CD to establish eligibility. Additionally Full OEM Versions with original install CDs also qualify.
Recommended to me by an MS rep.
The sweet price of a student discount can be bitter a few years later. I would also consider how old the original software is and whether it is close to a new release.
Different applications and manufacturers may differ, just an example.
PS: If you use Linux, OpenOffice.org is compatible with MS office and is opensource... free.
