Tubing cutter, propane torch & appliance dolly.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 6 Jul 2005 10:33:36 In Reply to: ot>water heater...., kooch, Wed, 6 Jul 2005 10:04:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
are about all the tools you will need to D-I-Y. I hired mine replaced because I thought the gas line would need to be re-piped to accomodate the new heater. I don't have a pipe threader and didn't want to spend an entire day running back-and-forth to hardware store(s) buying miscellaneous lengths of pipe, each too long or too short. Imagine my surprise when I saw the plumber slide the new one into position and everything matched up!
I had to supply the torch (his ran out of gas), the hose to drain the tank, half the labor to cart the old one out of the basement, and all of the labor to cart the old one to the recycling/scrap metal center!
His total time on-site was maybe an hour.
You will need 2 new dielectric couplings for the pipes into/out of the tank, a new temperature/pressure relief valve, and plan on replacing the inlet valve too (just for ease of future maintenance work). Two feet of copper tubing and two sweat-solder couplings completes the list of parts.
Cut away the old lines to remove the old heater, use the new sweat couplings and new tubing to connect exisitng house piping to new heater.
