Might be a real cheap fix, only $5........ Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 6 Jul 2005 15:56:12 In Reply to: ot>water heater...., kooch, Wed, 6 Jul 2005 10:04:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just read LesH's message and I realized how often I see the same thing happen, relatively new water heaters thrown out.
Coming out of the gas valve you will see three tubes disappearing towards the burner. The 1/4-inch diameter line is gas for the burner. The 1/8-inch diameter line is gas for the pilot light. The 1/16-inch diameter line is the thermocouple. All dimensions approximate. If the thermocouple fails, you will lose all hot water since the pilot won't stay lit. A replacement thermocouple is only around $5.
Unfortunately, all thermocouples you can buy these days are universal fit. What should be a two minute job turns into 15-30 minutes as you are forced to try every little fitting and bracket in the kit to get the thermocouple alligned correctly in the pilot flame.
Finiky work, but a cheap fix. If your only problem is no flame and no pilot, it is probably the thermocouple.
Goodluck.
