2005 9-5 Arc Wagon
1. Driving from Denver to our place in the mountains. Wife and I, three dogs, back loaded with power tools and hardware, two 15 foot touring kayaks on the roof rack. No air conditioning on, average mileage for the trip up (net elevation gain of 2,500 feet with one 11,000' pass at Eisenhower Tunnel and one 9,000 foot pass): 28.0. Average 28.3 round trip, with several full-boost passing moves (RV's and boat towers on the road this time of year), A/C on some of the time. 65-75 most of the way. *What other cars can do this while providing such great performance (besides a VW TDi)?*
2. On the way up - night time, cruise control set at 65 on a straight, smooth 2-lane state route, side of the road lined with thick brush and trees, no shoulder. Switch to low beams, car in distance. Oncoming car is much further away than I thought, back to high beams (love those xenons) which reveal a large black bull that probably weighs well over 2,000 lbs, 30 to 50 yards in front of me. So big that his head is a good 2-3 feet above the roof. Slam on brakes and hard swerve left at the same time, tcs/abs lighting up, wife doing the sudden breathe-in-oh-my-god-we're gonna die thing, serve back into the proper lane, slow way down and feel the adrenaline kick in. Probably the closest call I've ever had.
I will take some credit for my driving skill and reaction time, but will also be more careful on this road in the future - lots of cattle and wildlife (Elk and mule deer are also quite large). Car handled it unbelievingly well - recall that it is fully loaded plus 120 lbs on the roof. I'm quite certain any SUV would have rolled.
BTW, SAAB's TV adds totally miss the mark...Screw the flaky/quirky "I'm a unique individual" adds. They need to emphasize the performance - more testoserone! Safe passing, stealth, fuel efficient, safety.
