I know what 'ya mean. I can't say I've driven a lot of nice cars, but when I got my 1999 95 Sportswagon it kept me from turning my head completely. I no longer say, "Boy I'd like to take a spin in that", or "One day I hope to be driving something like that". I already am. Sage is sexy, sporty, and elegant.
I've had her for 2.5 years. Whomever had her, treated her like the lady she is. Mileage was high, but it had to have been highway miles, as she was showroom gorgeous. Not a scratch.
Seems as though my usual bad luck followed her though. I bought her from a used car dealer. The dealer powerwashed the engine which ruined components that they had to replace. Thank God the problem showed up as their head mechanic was driving since I brought it in because I thought I heard a sound I didn't like.
Then last year a guy had a heart attack at the wheel, crossed the grass median, and totalled my car. Some call me crazy, but I had her fixed, despite the fact that his insurance company didn't pay a dime, as there is a loop-hole in NJ that states that since he wasn't negligent (he was dying) that his insurance company doesn't have to pay anything. So I dug into my retirement and covered what wasn't covered by my collision insurance. But it wasn't purely a love decision. I couldn't afford to replace it with even a certified pre-owned. But I also didn't want to replace it with another type of car. I only had her 1.5 years at the time. Also the total was because his car tore up the driver side rear quarter panel and my 2 dash board airbags went off.
Being a busy person, I discovered last Fall that the timing belt needed immediate replacement and I almost lost the car again.
Now the TCS is asking for anywheres between $100 and $2500 (I'll find out Wednesday) My muffler is asking for $480, too.
I look at it this way, too. I have co-workers who think I'm nuts. Who say, "Why don't you get another car." I own my car outright. To me she is just as exciting as a new one. She doesn't have OnStar or a Nav Map, but she's got everything else, at least enough for me. I wouldn't trade her in for jumping into a new Honda with monthly payments. That, to me, sounds freakin' ridiculous. I know she's getting older, but I'd like to have something in my life that I at least like. Plus there's no new car in my near future after the expense of the accident anyway. One day in the far future, I'll get a 9 5 Sports Combi and I really look forward to it, but I am not ashamed about putting money and time into a valuable sleek machine that I love. Now there! ;^)
