the .50 BMG in the original machinegun. Imagine that concussion in full auto. On a low tripod the shockwave from the barrel tears up grass and dirt in a triangle expanding from the muzzle. When shooting, everything gets blurred so you have to use a spotter. Well that's how it was when I tried it, being a conscript in the army. Now they have fancy optical sights and more stabile mounts.
As for hunting rifles it sounds like you've been hanging out with the wrong people. You don't just hope to hit the target with a 30-06 or 308. They are very much precision instruments requiring focus to use (properly). To even get a hunting rifle license here in Denmark you have to be able to put 5 out of 6 shots within a 20 cm circle at a 100 meters. This is just the minimum, as you generally try to put all your 6 shots within a 10 cm circle. If you're good you can get your spread under 5 cm. So no it doesn't take less skill to be proficient with a 30-06 than a .22, rather the other way around. ;)
They are also not heavy calibers, just the standard for deer hunting. Big game demands considerably higher powered rifles (not that I like or endorse that kind of hunting at all).
