I must say that I totally agree with Czar's comments. I grew up on a small farm in the UK where vermin control was a daily routine, so I was very familiar with shotguns, .22 rifles and airguns. At school I was in the cadet corps so learned to shoot accurately with .22 and .303 rifles (yes, I'm that old!) and represented the school at Bisley (the Mecca of target shooters, at least on our side of the pond). On joining the Navy I was given access to all sorts of firearms from .22 target rifles and pistols to Bofors 30/60 semi-auto ship's guns. The accuracy bug then hit me big time - me against the target. Nothing macho, just a sport that I became very good at and spent a lot of time, money and effort in "getting it right", culminating in a place in Navy, Combined Services, England and GB teams over a long period of time. Apart from my target shooting, I did some deer hunting as a trained, qualified and authorised MoD Deer Manager on the MoD estates and ranges in UK - very controlled and always to the cull plan; pure trophy-taking was strictly forbidden. We had to take regular safety tests - knowledge and shooting - at 6 month intervals. To get back to the thread, I owned a couple of excellent centre-fire rifles - a .243 and a 30-06. Many people in UK use .308Win for the bigger deer (red deer is the biggest native deer we have) although the .243 is perfectly adequate at the appropriate range. Until the 308Win (7.62mm NATO) round came along, the 30-06 was the preferred rifle for long range target shooting - I read a lot about it in the hands of the US Navy top shots of years ago. In the UK we shoot .308Win over open sights out to 1000 yards and "match rifle" - open or optical sights - out to 1200 yards. Challenging! Anyone who has been to Bisley will know just how much fun that can be - it's hard enough to see the targets at that range. I always used to load my own full-bore pistol ammo (.32S&W for UIT Centre-Fire, .38Sp and .357Mag for fun and long-range pistol, 9mm parabellum) and rifle ammo for deer - the first shot from a cold barrel has to count, you don't get "sighters"!! Bottom line: safety first, accuracy and fun second.
