I agree with the other post that heat in the attic is likely causing the melting. You may want to simply roll as econd layer of insulation on the floor of the attic and make sure you rally take care of the narrow section out towards the eaves.
Also make sure that you have the proper amount of ridge and soffit ventilation.
I imagine your technique of insulating between the attic rafters will work. It just seams more difficult. If you go this route, definitely be sure that you use the channels to guarantee un-interrupted air flow.
Vapor barrier location depends on your climate. Generally you want it on the warm/wet side so moisture does not become trapped in the walls/insulation. I would want to let a roof/attic breath pretty freely. I do not recommend a vapor barrier up there. Summer heat and moisture will rapidly deteriorate your roof framing and decking.
Not sure about the actual answer to your question, just giving my un-requested opinion.
