I'm glad you had such a uniformly awesome expereince with your 900s. I did not, and plenty of other folks out there are in the same boat. A transmission problem killed my '88 at a relatively young 148k, and my '91 took a MASSIVE infusion of money to fix leaky gaskets galore and chronic exhuast and brake problems. In terms of absolutely quality Saab is turning out better, more reliable cars than ever now.
They're not perfect, but you'd be very hard pressed to find a car these days that is. Even the much lauded Toyota is having sludge problems of late. So get your oil changed regularly with good synthetic, inspect the pullies, and carry a spare DI. You run into problems when people fail to maintain their cars, and with the average comsumer being a "drive and forget" type it's not suprising that it happens.
In the end all cars break, that will never change, and it doesn't make those who anticipate it defeatists with low expectations... it makes them realistic car owners.
