For casual use PCs are fine. If you need a computer to rely on totally--as in for your livelihood--there is no substitute for a Mac, IMHO. That makes it cheaper in the long run, which means a lot more value for the dollar.
I use my PowerBook 10-12 hours a day. Lots of writing, graphic design, web site maintenance, email, and lately video editing. My previous PowerBook was 5 years old and had almost 8000 hours on it when I retired it--and it still works well, considering it had a very hard life and has an older OS.
My present one, running OS X, NEVER crashes. It is rock solid reliable. It can take abuse (I have dropped it 2X) and it works everywhere I go, here and in Europe. It doesn't get viruses or spyware and it is painless to use.
Did it cost more than an equivalent PC? Sure. But I don't have to think about care and feeding. It's like a car that never needs maintenance. And since I live on the thing it is far cheaper--and more profitable-- to have 100% up time.
Just my opinion.
