Great article, those that deal in reality and logic would never make the emotional accusations we heard from state and local officials. I made a bet with friends last week that they would never find more than 1,000 dead, fortunately for them I'm on the right side of the guesswork so far.
We are a nation of laws and regulations. Many are designed to prevent the federal government from marching into a state and doing whatever it wants - even if its a rescue. And forget the science of logistics (which Wal Mart and the military are experts at), who pays for the first movement of any asset into the disaster zone?
I heard the governor of LA carping on the radio today that the feds had yet to sign a contract with a private firm to remove the dead bodies. What stops the governor from doing that? Why the Feds?
We witnessed a lot of lightweight talent at work the last to weeks, people who have been in power over 20 years. They can find the poor during voter registration drives, yet its the federal government's fault (read you and me pay for it) when something serious happens.
The press missed the real story, to our detriment. Long term thats the big disaster as those who were responsible are never called to account. And people suffered because of it.
