Oil sump volume vs oil filter suitability..? (long) Posted by Camm [Email] (#191) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Camm) on Tue, 13 Sep 2005 19:54:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Barely Saab related, but ask an oil question here and you get an education...
Anyways, I inherited a 1929 Studebaker President - a car I can maintain just fine, with the exception of the oil filter. The filter assembly is some aftermarket setup using a large barrel type filter (a Napa 1035). I took said filter to Napa to get a replacement and was laughed out of the joint - they hadnt seen one since the 70's. My gut instinct to work around this problem would be to go to a J-Yard and pull the oil filter/pressure sender assembly off a 900 (reason: its what I'm familiar with) and set it up in the old system's place, with the corresponding ease of finding replacement filters. Seems easy: the Stude runs ~40psi, an '83 900t (for example) runs 39.4 psi. The Stude however hold nearly two GALLONS of oil, as opposed to the 3.8 liters in a 900. Plumbing issues aside, is this reasonable? Is this scheme ignorant of a fundamental principle of engine lubrication? Are there other pressure and volume calculations I'm overlooking?
TIA
