Three new Michelin tires (one front, two rears) cost me $45; three new tubes, two rim strips & a pair of tire irons cost me $30; a carb rebuild (reseal) kit, fuel filter & odd assortment of trim pieces ran about $20. I figger the 0.6L of 15W-40 oil & 2 oz of Auto-Rx I used for the oil change are non-cost items, only because I had the fluids in the garage & they weren't slated to go in anything else. But I _did_ splurge & buy a can of moly/ptfe chain lube for $3.35, rather than use any of the chain-specific bicycle lubes I've got. (Man! This new lube is MESSY!)
You're a better man than me when it comes to protective gear. I'm using an old hard-shell Bell bicycle helmet (the Brava, similar to the "classic" V-1 Pro) until I can find a full-face helmet I like. (Actually, I'm looking at downhill mountain bike full face helmets. They're made with fiberglass or polycarbonate shells, & the only thing they lack is a shield.) Of course, I can't go much faster than 40 mph, so I'm typically not riding in a car lane but off to the side like a bicycle would. (The _last_ thing I want to do is piss off someone by forcing them to go slow!)
99% of the time, yes, my Saab is only a transportation appliance. We have the luxury here in the US to have an awesome selection of quality vehicle choices, so my choice was based only partly on utilitarianism & safety/ergonomics, while fun & desire fed the rest. I get both with my C900, & people are surprised when I tell them I get 30 mpg in it to boot! But one of my parents had a fierce environmental streak, & I guess that left too deep of an impression in me. 30 mpg (or 45 mpg when I drive/bike) is nothing compared to 120 mpg for only an extra 10 minutes of commute time.
Yes, I feel good about my purchase, but I'm also enjoying the hell out of riding it! It's a hoot! (Probably not how you'd describe the ride of your Kawasaki...) I know you'll enjoy yours at least as much. But maybe we'll try a different place to eat next time. :-)
