I've been thinking of biking to work, but I'm almost decided against it. For one, it would be over 20 miles one way, which is at least 40 miles per day. At my current average speed of 12 mph (assuming it's as hilly as it is near my house), that would take me three hours per day (2+ hours more than driving). On top of a 9-10 hour workday, that's a lot. I'd have to have a charger for my light at work, which means that I'd have to buy another complete lighting system (current one is too old and has been modified). For a nice lighting system and extra charger, it'll be about $300 or more. There are several left turns I'd have to take in a bike. Unfortunately, I'd have to take these at the busiest times, and there is no turn lane and it's an undivided two lanes of traffic. I can't think of any easy way to navigate these turns.
