both Germany and Austria when I was there. But reminder! Try to take out large sums at a time because there is a fee for each overseas transaction (I think it's $5 per)
I used my credit card there as well.I think as long as long as your debit card has the VISA or MASTERCARD logo you can use it just like a credit card, even if somewhere says they don't take credit cards.
Traveler's checks are also a good idea. If you would rather have the security of using a credit card, call you CC company and get some of those checks that draw on your credit and pay it when you get back. It's a good way to reduce liability on purchases.
Have fun! I love Germany and esp. the southern area. My family is from the country so I have spent quite a a bit of time there (proabably about 2 years out of the last 25, anyway)
