..but that won't stop a long answer.
So I don't profess to know how a tire actually transmits forces.
However, let's get out of the snow and on to dry pavement. I think that it is intuitive to anyone that a wider tire will have a larger contact patch. I don't know for sure that it's true, but until proven otherwise, I have to follow this intuition. Sraight-line acceleration on dry pavement, will a wider tire give better traction? The only way that could be consistently true (ignoring differences in rubber compound and tread design) would be if it has more tire in contact with the pavement.
What could be happening, is that the air pressure within the tire, holding the sidewall vertically in a stressed (tension) condition, could allow the sidewall to function as a structural element to transmit forces radially. This could be transferred along the contact patch.
Any tire engineers out there?
