Sorry, I can't add anything to the original question, but a counterpoint to the supposed gross inefficiency of wood... My Mother's house was built in the 50's around a brick central chimney core, into which the furnace and two fireplaces vent. The main fireplace (the only one we use) has a '70's vintage forced air fireplace insert in it. When that is running in the winter, not only is the entire first floor almost unbearably warm, but the central brick mass acts as a chimney. If the forced hot air from the insert could be diverted through the existing oil furnace's ductwork, a fire of 4-5 logs would easily heat two large-ish floors for a good 4 hours. Modern (post '92) inserts are all EPA certified and designed to be very clean burning as well. Moral of the story, if the current stove is no good, and you are still interested in wood, look into a forced air insert!
Good luck
