Wood stoves are definitely best for heating but there is something about a fireplace that can't be imitated.
For one, you can make some really tasty food in a fireplace, among the coals, that you can't with either a wood stove or a gas fireplace. I do it all the time. Wrap potatoes in foil and throw them in the embers along the sides. Get a dutch oven and bake bread, make a roast or a even a soup either by placing it on the base of the fireplace or by using a fireplace crane.
Also, I've heated my living room ten degrees by putting a fan at a good spot along side the fireplace to curculate the air.
Another good technique for a sustainable fire is the top down fire instead of starting it from the bottom.
THere's a lot of info on the web...
