I recently converted our wood fireplace to gas to avoid: dirt of bringing wood into the house, dirt of hauling ashes our of the house, bugs which always are hiding in the logs, wood-smoke smell which permeates the entire house and all furnishings/frabics, drafty feeling throughout entire house while fire is burning, drafty feeling throughout the entire house while the ember bed is cooling to the point where it is safe to close the flue.
With that being said, my dad built his own home (also a Cape cod) during the time period your house was built. He layed the entire fireplace & chimney, from basement foundation thru 1-1/2 stories of house, then corbeled the chimney in the attic so it exited dead center of the home. His fireplace never had any of the problems my "builder special" masonry fireplace does (his had a built-in ash dump, proper design of flues for good draft, etc.), so I know it is possible to have a great natural fireplace.
If your fireplace is of masonry construction, you need to have it inspected to ensure it can safely burn wood again. If it is of metal construction it probably can not safely burn wood unless a previous owner converted it to gas.
There are fantastic looking gas log sets now, my favorites are by Hargrove. Through use of fluidized sand bed combustion the flames are yellow, not gas blue, like a real wood fire. The flames also flicker, dance, pop, and crackle like a wood fire. All without any additional chemicals, devices, or the aforementioned mess of a wood fire.
For energy efficiency from wood, nothing beats a well designed wood stove.
