Well, I didn't (yet) but am searching in earnest. In addition to all of the things mentioned below, it's also a good idea to go to the websites of local companies in your area. Many times jobs are listed in the "careers" section that aren't in the paper or elsewhere. It's worked for me so far.
Networking is good as well but I am in a new town so I don't have a lot of connections. My new neighbors have been extremely helpful in this regard. I have an interview today with a large (orange) home improvement company. Their recruiter told me that many of the "good jobs" are filled via networking. I guess the job I'm going to interview for is "not good." Unfortunately, she may be right. I am overqualified for the position but I can't refuse an interview.
I always make it a point during the interview to ask how many applications were received. I've found that over the course of roughly 5 interviews I've been told anywhere from 85-200 applications are received. I was surprised because that seemed low. I'm in a town of about 650,000 (1.1 million in the metro area).
Finally, the hiring process takes forever. Sometimes it's almost two months before I get the call. Be patient and supportive and know that her next job is out there. Best of luck to you both.
