Many will answer, and it all boils down to what you like after you and your wife test drive them. But after 2 9-5s (one Linear, one Aero), 2 NG900s and one OG9-3 in our family over the last 7-8 years, I'd say the 9-5 is a more modern, sophisticated design, roomier and much quieter inside than a 9-3 of that vintage. The 9-5 has dual zone climate control and the 9-3 doesn't, if that is important. The '02 9-3SE has a livelier ride, crisper handling (my opinion) and at about 400# lighter is more "tossable," but also has more wind nose and the usual hatch rattles, and a narrower "cozier" interior, but it has the excellent utility of the hatchback body. When I turned in my 2004 9-5 Aero, I debated getting another one, but ended up in the 2002 9-3. Some days I miss the Aero, some days I don't. C'est la vie.
I bought my 9-3 as a CPO, even though the cost was maybe $1500 higher, for peace of mind (it has already saved me $6-800 in warranty work in just seven months) and because the dealer has to replace certain wear items to qualify it for CPO - in my case, it needed a second key and the tires and battery were replaced before delivery.
Good luck.
/Geoff
