Rafe,
I don't know if you're being funny or serious, but... I like the strategy of asking where he'd put me before I offer where I'd like to go. That kinda sizes up where he thinks I fit or the level I should be.
Any tips for negotiating salary?
I'm almost tempted to be our "Global Account Manager" for Toyota if I can get it. The job is open, I've known the last 2 guys very well. It is a sales position that is very global. Not day to day cold calling and "would you like to buy a widget" sales, but more overall relationship mgmt and strategy. A few well connected folks have mentioned my name for it. I helped the new Automotive Sales VP get his job recenty by coaching him before the interviews on the Toyota account. Huge plus. In fact, he's in the SF office with me. That's who I'd work for. This is a distinct possibility.
If not that, perhaps some sort of "Program Manager" looking after the technical execution of projects either globally or in North America.
I wouldn't mind running the engineering team, but that would really require moving back from SF to Cleveland. I just can't do that now with my wife in school. Plus I'm not ready to move back to winterland.
Randy
