prepare for a 6 month stay instead of 3. Yes, they would say 3 months but what would you do if not. I've often been asked to go overseas for a short week, then they would tell me to stay for a month or until things were resolved.....argh...
Next, ask yourself, are they offering you this to get rid of you or they truly want you to go there. If you go, then you're out of their hair; if you stay, they would say sorry Randy, not much for you here. Yes, I always think negative but that's my nature 8-). Discussing what comes after would give you some indication whether they have thought about it at all.
Having said that, yes, I think it would be a great experience. Married with no kid is good. Wife in school is also good, she can study more but she has to take care of the bills, house, pets, cars etc. You will be busy over there with no free time or go to piano bars after working late with your Japanese colleages, maybe you would prefer not to tell your wife visiting piano bars....hmm hope she doesn't watch Lost in Translation....
Go East.....Far East....
