As others have pointed out, the Times has a slant. But ALL journalism is slanted. To disregard a news source because it is slanted is to disregard news; to read only news sources which agree with one's own leanings is to wallow in narrow mindedness, to avoid true understanding of the issues. The Times actually tries for balance; they have added conservative columnists in the last few years.
So even though it is slanted, the Times still has one of the best teams of reporters in existence. They still dig deeper in their reporting than most other sources. And, as a professor of rhetoric, I just love to read their writing which is beautiful and intelligent.
In balance to the Times, I also read the Wall Street Journal, which is slanted in the other direction. They also have fine reporters and a reputation for digging. Their writing isn't quite as beautiful to behold, but it's still high quality.
If you're interested in current events, Mike, I think you should consult a variety of high quality news sources on a regular basis. As a news gathering sources, the NYTimes is still among the very best. By recognizing its strengths and seeking to balance its weaknesses, you will find yourself to be a well informed, thoughtful individual capable of seeing the big picture and understanding solutions to our myriad problems.
