I though the same, Mike...>> Posted by PGAero [Email] (#1143) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PGAero) on Fri, 27 Jan 2006 14:41:04 In Reply to: What, no K1200S?...., Mike Lynch [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 27 Jan 2006 11:43:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I like the new K1200S, and maybe I'll ride one someday :o)
I hear you, J, on the price difference. But, how many bikes do you know that run over 100,000 miles. I once talked to a salesman at a Suzuki/Honda shop and I mentioned that I was looking into BMW's. He said that a sport bike from Suzuki/Kawasaki/etc. would be a good buy only if it had less than about 20,000 miles. IF a BMW were purchased with 40-50K on the clock, he said, it would be expected to go for a long time to come.
I guess though, that if you don't ride a lot of miles, and expect to sell the bike, then that is not a consideration. I know that when I buy a bike, I'll buy a BMW (used). I want a bike I can put serious hours on in a single day and still feel like I can stand up at the end.
I'm with you, Mike... BMW is in a different catagory...not necessarily better...but different. The "Better" discussion has to be looked at through the perspective of the one who's demanding certain things from a bike. IF I want to go crazy-fast, then I'd probably not go BMW.
Anyway, I think that the motorcycle market is more able to do inovative things and get a way with it. In the car industry, "inovation" means safety, power, and "gizmos" that drive the car so the "driver" doesn't have to. (I think this is a tragedy, by the way.) However, things like turbos were once inovative in their application to passenger cars. And, BMW's hydrogen/gas compatible engine, as well as Saab's E85/gas compatible. That's cool stuff. There's a lot of inovation still to be done, but car design is so confined to legislated standards that it's slow to make its way to where it should be.
In the Bike world, Buell can make a swing arm the oil reservoir...that's inovation..at least thinking outside the box. And, BMW's suspension work is nothing short of remarkable. It's like the difference between double A-arms and leef springs. It seems there are fewer regulations defining motorcycles,
Cheers!
