Mr Lipke,
I moved to Chattanooga TN in January 1981 and lived there until July 1985. In '85, I started working for the Dept of Defense, which meant I had to moving, living overseas, and other places in the states. I moved there from California, after receiving my degree. Since I had never been in the south, I was concerned about a number of things. However, I quickly learned that it was a great place to live. I maintain my friendships and return when I can to visit. There are a lot of things to do, particularly outdoor activites. If you live near a university town, you will have more fine arts things to do, and, it won't feel like you are living in the "country". You can also live in the "country" if you wish. It depends on where you go and what you want. I agree with the posts that pick the eastern side of TN. The mountains are great. The pace of life will be much slower than you are use to. Folks are very friendly and helpful. There is good access to health care and overall cost of living is less. Tennessee and western NC (Ashville area) are tops on our list of places to retire. Take a trip and visit. You will be pleasantly surprised.
