Don, Sorry for taking so long to post again. Chattanooga proper would not be the place I would suggest. Depending on the amount of money you want to spend, there are options. There are three mountians (plateaus if you will) in the area- Lookout Mountain (old money), Signal Mountain (new money), Elder Mountain (if you just want to get away). Signal Mountain has a number of places to live, from older houses on the brow to newer neighborhoods. Property size also varies just like anywhere else. It is cooler in the summer and no pollution. Although I was never aware of that much pollution then. Many of the steel and textile mills are not working much anymore. Lookout Mountain is old money or big money. There are a lot of old mansions, etc. A bit snobish. Elder Mountain is very exclusive. It is or was owned by the Elder family. They have sold off parts of it so people can live there. It is gated. There are other areas as well. Missionary Ridge is a use to be a decent place but not sure anymore (old homes). It is basically a civil war monument. Hixson is a nice place with many new developments. You can also live outside of Chattanooga in Ooltewah, Athens, Cleveland. It really depends what you want. I remember when I first moved there in '81. I would leave Chattanooga and immediately be in the sticks. It is not that way anymore. There is a tremendous amount of development going on. Winters are mild, with the occasional ice storm. I think sales and property tax is elevated to make up for the no state income tax. And yes they still wave with the whole hand and the acompaning "Hey". Many folks do the single digit and a nod of the head. Enjoy your trip and good luck.
