As snow boarding became more and more popular in the '80s, though still under the mainstream's radar, many Skateboards jumped on "board". During those winter months when sk8ers couldn't use their sticks they came to see similarities between the 2 sports and applied their skateboarding tricks and styles on the mountain. In fact many of us took our skateboards apart and used them on local hills. As time and technologies progressed we saw the creation of half-pipes and then terrain parks on mountains, both of which relate more to skateboarding. Now, even skiers are hitting both parks and certain elements of snow boarding are being embraced by skiers (& vice versa).
The grab helps the boarder (both sk8 & snow) remain centered over the board (especially when doing 360s, 540s, etal). The elements of style are found more in body and other arm and leg positions while executing aerial maneuvers and this may include a grab depending on what hand is grabbing where & the trick. This evolution is similar to early skateboarding when surfers used their wheeled planks to "surf" downhill, then moved onto pools, then ramps, etc etc...
