when spinning, grabbing your board helps because it keeps you compact. however, depending on what kind of grabs you do, it is actually harder to grab... leading hand/trailing hand, frontside/backside/nose/tail grab. There are natural ways to grab and there are unnatural ways to grab doing a certain trick and it all counts.
also you can tweak your board and body when you grab a board. it sure adds for a style, but it actually adds to the technical skill as tweaking your body makes it harder to stay balanced in the air - hence the control.
yet you could still have style and show control without grabbing your board. I just watched the women's halfpipe and their runs just blew me away!
