tower. That is why their batteries drained quickly. A digital phone only periodically sends out a really short bleep signal and listens for a return. Then it goes dormant for a while, to repeat the cycle. The Tri-mode phones, ones that could default to analog, could drain themselves dead in a short while if you were to drive through some digital dead spot that only had analog. Still, the authorities, if they want, can roughly track a non-GPS phone, even analog, at least through the cell towers the phone connects with. There are companies out there who will set up your kid's cell phone (or your employees') so you can then log onto the net and get a GPS location on where your kid, or at least the kid's turned on phone, is. It gets a little creepy for me.
