I was looking for a place to give some driving lessons last night, I figured I'd try Floyd Bennet Field in vicinity of the Rockaways but was not sure whether it was open or not. After all, logic would seem to dictate that an abandoned airport only a mile or two away from John F. Kennedy airport infastructure/runways should be guarded and patrolled.
Well, it wasn't! The place was wide open for me to give a few lessons. After instruction I slowly taxied (?) onto runway 33 and after checking the length of the strip for debris performed a 0->100mph 100->0mph test with the windows down. :) (<--that's a grin) Felt odd to stare down the center track of a runway, mash the throttle and have your chest pressed into the seatback...wait this isn't JetBlue...it's a blue Aero.

Then it occured to me, this old airport is a great place for NYC Saab owners to meet! Sure the lack of shade may be a problem on sunny days but if the weather is right... Not sure if they have an open water source, I know they do have some shaded camp/picnic sites and runway...lots of it....
