There are sooooo many assumptions made about the energy of ethanol compared to the fossil fuel energy used to produce it. (I'm a chemist, I've looked at life cycle analysis papers on ethanol, I've listened to the discussions at green chemistry and biofule forums, etc). Such a surprise: those who produce ethanol can show a net energy gain. Hard line environmentalists can show the opposite. All based on the starting assumptions.
Not sure about the fuel efficiency comments: anyone know if the discussion is miles per gallon or miles per energy content of ethanol (BIG impact on the discussion)
Ethanol from corn kernels is marginal; the residue is great cattle feed (and that changes the energy balance equation). However, ethanol from cellulose (corn stover, sawgrass) has a lot more potential -- and now is the time to sart builing the infrastructure to support it. That argues for some ethanol fuel use now.
BUT -- is there enough farmland to support our demand for fuel?(personnally, i'd like some food as well)
Cheers,
Paul
