in engineering school, played down her intellect, got us all to help her, then blew us away in the exams. It was kind of insulting - could have used to time helping her to help myself, or better, someone who needed it!
It only worked once. Once the cat was out of the bag, that was the end of her stupid quotient quota.
Are you sure your dinner guest just wasn't being polite, or a good listener?
Just remember, as Scott Adams of Dilbert paraphrases it, you start out as an idiot and learn to be an expert in your own field, but in everything else you pretty much stay an idiot.
Of course, the reverse strategy is the intellectual bluff, where you intimidate someone with your intensity and brightness, full lighting system engaged. Probably wouldn't want to stand to close to one at a party.
A successful business friend said once he preferred to let other people talk, and to ask the dumb questions, which revealed how much they really knew, without disclosing what he knew to them.
Why don't you play it back at her at the next dinner date?
Cheers,
