My 100+ year old house is also sided with cedar shingles and three years ago we built a matching garage, which was finished in November. On our painter's advice, we waited until the next spring to STAIN the shingles to match the house (which has not been stained in at least six years - no idea when it was last done). Even though latex stain was used on both the house and the garage, they both seem to be holding up very well in Chicago's extreme climate changes.
A few houses away, the owners had their entire house reshingled, immediately primed and finished in a semi-gloss brown paint, a few shades lighter and redder than our dark brown stain (why would they do this?). Two years later, that house is peeling like crazy, a real eyesore, needs a complete repaint. And it will need another repaint in a few more years, etc.
I believe that your painter is in too great of a hurry - plus, you should really look into stain vs. paint. The rough surface of cedar shingles is not conducive to a great paint job, so why try?
