I had planned to use a sand mix concrete but forgot to include that detail, and had realized when typing my question that burying chicken wire in only a 1/2-inch concrete layer didn't sound wise, but I hadn't considered use of a bonding agent or sealing the small gap which I should find surrounding the flue so that concrete won't enter it.
I don't know if I can readily find Vulkem caulk at a store which will sell to homeowners, so I may substitute fireplace/firebox caulk. I will also try to find bonding agent in a small quantity, I think I have seen that in one quart cans.
Thanks again!
