A little while ago, I was riding my trusty 1992 vintage Specialized Crossroads Cruz hybrid bicycle and came upon a group ride who caught up with me. They were all on nice road bikes and were kind of snobby, but I kept up with them for about 4 miles before they turned off. So that inspired me to take part in a road cycling time trial as they said beginners were welcome.

So I ran the 12.33 mile race in 42:17.70 which was dead last, but I'll be 35 in a week. It was funny how people didn't know what to make of me when I was at the start line and getting passed wasn't fun. But I average 17.5 mph which beats my target of 17.
My question to you expert riders is how much faster would I have ridden with a decent road bike?
Some people say it's the engine not the bike, but I think I could have averaged pretty close to 20 mph. My hybrid is quite heavy and it's hard to get in an aero position without the right handlebars on my current bike. I'll wait for sales to buy an $800+ road bike, probably one with flat handlebars on which I could put those aero position rests. That Specialized Sirrus looks good.
