Yeah, cyclists can be snobby. Gotta have the right clothing, right bike, can't use toe clips - gotta use clipless pedals. You'll notice most of those fancy jerseys are yellow. I've stuck with my Specialized road bike with toe clips and downtube shifters, and it's a delight to ride. On the flat, compared to my mountain bike, which is probably similar in performance on flat roads to your hybrid, I can probably eke out another 5 mph consistently.
I also wear just a regular t-shirt, and my shorts are not form-fitting. I have cross-trainer tennis shoes on my feet. I don't understand why anybody would go out on a training ride with an ultra-wind-resistant jersey. Sure, they wick sweat and all that good stuff, but so what. But I'm not a racer. It's a different culture, I suppose.
I agree with Ari about avoiding overspending. The snobby attitude you encountered with those cyclists will have a tendency to make you open your wallet wider.
