I've been a competitive cyclist for over 25 years and in the business for over 30 and it never ceases to amaze me how unfriendly cyclists can be. I try and wave to anyone riding a bike because, similar to coming on the saabnet, we all have something in common. My "rules" of riding are never wear a jersey of a team you don't belong to, never wear tights with a short sleeve jersey (long sleeve jersey with shorts is ok) don't act like a d*ck to other people who are out enjoying their ride even if they aren't all kitted up, If you need or want to impress people on the daily training ride of how strong you are maybe you should take up racing to find out how slow you really are, have fun when you ride and don't drink cheap beer afterwards it's a waste of a workout.
Caarma rent a road bike from a reputable shop and try it before you commit, at 35 and with relative fitness you should be able to average over 20 for a 12.3 mile TT on a decent road bike. Join a local club you'll find that bike racers love to bench race as much as ride and you should be able to get in with a group that can teach you the finer points of riding with others. If you do get interested in riding and racing be aware it can be addicting.
Email me if you want to talk bikes, email in profile.
Cheers,
George
