Tom, I was in a nearly identical position as you at about your age. I was in insurance sales, getting married, and my wife (now of 16 years) wanted me to have a stable income.
I had a sociology degree from Miami Univerisity and was only getting sales offers. The bad news is that I went to work for the state agency in Ohio that does Social Security disability decisions and was not making a huge salary, but the good news is that I went back and got my master's (they did not pay for it, but they would now if I was pursuing it) and moved up steadily.
I became a supervisor, then manager, then assistant bureau director, and now I'm the director of the state vocational rehabilitation program. Maybe not everyone's dream career track, but very satisfying work, fair compensation, and excellent benefits.
I'd be happy to discuss with you by e-mail if you'd like.
Good luck, and let us know how you're doing. Erik
