It sounds like he may have purchased a set of guages - hi side and lo side, which is ideally what you need to be sure you are recharging the system properly. But you are correct, if the system has been exposed to external air a new dyrer is almost a must, and if it has been evacuated you must add new refrigerant oil, that is a must or be prepared to replace the compressor.

I'd suggest that he does a search on the web, there a some sites while not Saab specific will give you instructions for evacuating/recharging the system - pressures and the like for auto AC systems are pretty consistent with the newer 134 and scroll compressors - but the amount of refrigerant and oil does vary and is specific to a particular model.
