I'm not trying to be argumentative....I'd just like to set some facts straight. In Chicago, you don't have to pull over for an unmarked car, but you're obligated to drive to the nearest district police station if you reasonably have doubts as to the identity of those in that unmarked car. However, I can guarantee that if you don't pull over, the officers in the unmarked car will get on the radio and a number of marked cars will assist them with the stop. Not all unmarked cars have "M" plates. The "M" plates are not State of Illinois vehicles, but denote that the car is a "municipal" vehicle, registered to a certain city, town, or village. State of Illinois vehicles have a "U" at the beginning of the plate. However, there are unmarked vehicles that have regular plates and some covert vehicles that you'd never realize are police cars. In Illinois, as probably most if not all states, an off-duty police officer may carry a weapon. Retired police officers are also permitted to carry weapons.....this is on a nation-wide basis and the retired officer must re-qualify with a firearm on a yearly basis in order to keep that status. If an off-duty officer would observe you commit a crime (and I don't mean some bullsh#t traffic stop while he's in his Mazda), act in good faith, announce his office and display his weapon, I'd think twice about "having every right to defend yourself."
