Not confrontational at all, good information exchange.
0- consumer RAID in a SOHO, me too, that's what I related.
1- bet you have more usage (ergo losses) in the house at all times due to the taps. that was the point. almost no-one puts the taps on a power strip to turn them off when the devices the drive aren't in use. I do for eight of them in my office but admit there are others in the house I skip. My point was there are larger things in your house right now that could offset anything an additional drive would do. Besides, just run two new large drives rather than three large drives.
2- spin the drives down when not being using. zero watts.
3- never said to rely on powersupply fan, just the power supply for the DC watts needed. Using a good case you should be able to use 1 to 4 additional fans. Also suggest thermostat with front case reading. Lastly, thermostatic shutoff for the most parnoid amoung us (me).
4- on the rebuild with a different drive size, with a RAID-5 you are more likely to rebuild using the remaining drives in place rather than building on newer drives. That means you now have an array with 2 or 3 older drives and the one new one. With a RAID-1 your rebuild time is significantly less, and you could decide to create an entirely new RAID-1 and copy the data there, and then return that surviving drive to the shelf! Even if you decided to do something similar with RAID-5 (copy to a new raid set rather than replace the failed drive an recontruct the failed drive) the performance will be slower as the controller should be doing a reconstruct data on the fly. Again, it's all about protection of the data, ease of use (rememeber SOHO here), cost, downtime, uptime, and ease of use. Count your lucky stars you haven't had to reconstruct a drive on RAID-5.
5- Filesystem? dunno, the usual I guess. what's it mean to you?
good exchanges always advance the knowledge of the participants!
