Instead of artwork, which I don't think will lighten the room like you want, I'd either repaint it completely or add in a lighter color. The vertical stripes idea is not bad, but you could "rag" on a lighter color. Usually, with these techniques, a darker color is put over a lighter color. Ragging involves diluting the topcoat 1:1 with water and using a rag like a t-shirt. The paint needs to be wrung out of the rag, so it isn't dripping wet. Then you roll it randomly over the surface. Back off considerably when you get to corners, as the effect is magnified in those areas. Nice thing is, if you don't like it, you can just paint over. There are other options as well, like sponging. Check out the options at your local home store, like Menard's. They usually have several different devices.
