I still plan on buying a new set of winter tires..... I have limited myself to three choices; Semperit Sport Grips (the same tire I have used for the past two winters), Pirelli Sottozerro, or Continental Winter? 810's. A full set of any of these tires will cost me the same, +/- $10, after including shipping, mounting, balancing, and disposal. All are H-rated tires.
A German magazine, which has been reference here before, placed the Pirelli and Conti tires in the "Best Choice" category, with the Semperits in the "Better Choice" category. The only advantage of the Semperits is that a local tire store will order them for me and I only have to drive in with my old Semperits installed on my car. The old tires are worn to only 5/32 to 6/32 tread depth after 20,000 miles of use.
With the Pirellis or Contis I will have to order the tires, have them delivered to my home, then lug them to a tire store for mounting and balancing. I like the look of the Pirellis better but the Contis were rated slightly better by the German auto magazine. Of course I also have to wonder if nationalistic pride placed the German, ...er Continental brand tires ahead of the Pirellis.
Any real world comparative experience with these two tires?
Thanks.
