Snow Tire article in latest Car & Driver..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 8 Nov 2006 08:03:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This article is far too brief to be considered a test, but it did draw an interesting/arguable conclusion.
Car & Driver tested three Goodyear tires at Goodyear's snow facility in Northern Michigan and their engineering facility in Akron. The three tires consisted of a dedicated performance tire (F1 maybe), an All-Season tire (Triple Tread?), and a winter tire (GW3?). The arguable conclusion reached was that dedicated winter tires provide only a minor improvement in traction over All-Season tires and probably can't be cost justifed. The exception is with vehicles which are shod with performance tires during the summer months. C & D could not accelerate in the snow with summer performance tires!
This conclusion was reached on the basis of acceleration tests and braking tests on snow only. No ice testing was performed, and no lateral G-force testing was performed because the snow would rut and not yield consistent testing parameters.
